Ongoing Volunteer Activities

Tuesday morning gardeners
plant and maintain the mixed borders in Bush’s Pasture Park, learn proper horticultural and garden design techniques, and enjoy the company of other like-minded folks.   Each session includes a coffee break and many are followed by SLIGs (sack lunch in a garden) at local private gardens or nurseries.  One or two daylong excursions are planned each year.

Greenhouse curator and assistant curator
maintain the plant collection and interior of the historic Bush Conservatory.

Naming Project Committee
assists in the identification and labeling of the Lord & Schryver Flowering Trees in the NW corner of Bush’s Pasture Park.

Rose Garden Committee
oversees the projects in the various rose gardens including the hybrid tea/floribunda and Tartar Old Rose collections.

Rose Garden Volunteers
adopt a bed of roses and tend the selected bed(s) during the blooming season. “Deadhead” roses (remove spent blooms) and weed the bed to help our marvelous rose collection thrive.

Technical Volunteer
helps maintain the FOBG database, and updates and maintains the FOBG website and facebook page.

Friends of Bush Gardens undertakes projects and programs that enhance the gardens of Bush’s Pasture Park and encourage greater community awareness of the importance of plants and landscapes.  We maintain the plants in the Bush Conservatory, care for several of the existing gardens, and develop new gardens.

Garden Tour Docents
give tours of Bush’s Pasture Park, including the evolution of the cultural landscape and various flower gardens.

General Carpenter
aids in the construction of structures needed in the park and for the plant sales

Bush’s Pasture Park is home to an amazing collection of plants and designed landscapes, both historic and contemporary.  In the face of massive budget cuts since 1980, it is critical that citizens support the City of Salem in the stewardship of this valuable community asset.  Friends of Bush Gardens and its predecessor, The Bush Conservatory Gardeners, have been providing just such support since 1979 by preserving and enhancing the gardens and conservatory of Bush’s Pasture Park in partnership with the City of Salem Parks.
