Salem Public Library Seeks Summer Interns
​You can help the young people in our community to develop their skills and interests. The City of Salem is committed to investing in the next generation. Through direct support and partnership, the City provides recreation activities, service learning opportunities, and other programs for the young people of Salem and their families.

​Join the Salem Public Library for an amazing summer adventure, keeping children and teens involved in literacy and fun! Volunteer interns will have the opportunity to work on special events, help visitors at our Summer Reading Club Desk, and work on other interesting projects to support the program. Intern positions are open until filled.

  • Gain experience working in the Youth Services Department of a public library
  • Build skills in program implementation, project completion, and leadership
  • Gain experience working within deadlines and established procedures
  • Acquire samples for your professional resume or portfolio

Job description and qualifications

The annual Summer Reading Club draws about 6,000 children and teens every year.

Candidates must be available:

  • Late May to August
  • 10–12 hours per week
  • For Children’s Services, Tuesday and Friday afternoons and one other day each week
  • For Teen Services, Wednesday afternoons, Thursday evenings, and one other day each week

Intern responsibilities include:

  • Event preparation and delivery
  • Promoting and implementing the summer reading program
  • Creating displays
  • Data entry of summer reading statistics

Successful candidates will meet these qualifications:

  • Completed at least one year of college
  • Self‐motivated and able to work independently
  • Comfortable interacting with children and teens
  • Willing to learn new skills and able to complete tasks in a timely manner
  • Creativity and crafting abilities are preferred
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Microsoft Office
  • Previous work, coursework, or volunteer experience relating to children or teens is helpful
